YouTube for Android gets card UI, multitasking in new update

A revamped version of YouTube for Android brings an all-new look and new features

Google on Monday released an an all new update of its YouTube for Android mobile app. The redesigned app brings full support for Google's new card-based user interface and some great new features.

If you're somehow unfamiliar with YouTube, it is Google's premier video service. On YouTube, users can post videos and watch them for free. Ads and mobile ads dominate the service and Google offers official YouTube apps on Android and iOS.
Anyway, back to YouTube for Android. The new update makes the YouTube app very similar to Google+ for Android. In the update users can now search for play lists for the first time, and share videos with a new preview screen options. The update will also make YouTube much much faster, which is great.
What other features does the the new app sport? While the UI is the cool, standout thing here, Google is giving the app some built-in multitasking. A user can now drag a video down with one finger while it's playing and it will continue to play in a smaller window on the right. This is hands down a killer feature and something I really hope comes to the iOS app. This sort of multitasking on the iPad would be stellar.
With the recent launch of Google Chromecast, it isn't surprising to see an update of this magnitude. Google will likely be pushing Chromecast and YouTube hard this fall as it tries to enter futher into the consumer market.
The new version of YouTube for Android is available now in Google Play. The app is free and definitely worth a spin.
